Within the event the 17 goals of the United Nations for a sustainable development (SDGs) the Krabi region was awarded by the worldwide Forum on Human Settlements as „Global Low-Carbon Ecological Scenic Spot“. The award requires a sustainable development within the whole region, in particular in respect to technology: besides, above all energy saving measures for the reduction of greenhouse gases stand in the foreground. Krabi takes pleasure to more and more visitors causing, however, also negative impacts. For sure you know the world-famous Maya Bay, originating from the film “The Beach”? The famous scenery is located in Krabi and was already often closed for visitors. This year it is closed for an indefinite time, so nature can recover from the strain of the tourists. Apparently successfully, because sharks were sighted in the bay what points to the fact that the eco system slowly regenerates. However, in spite of the rising tourist figures and popularity of the region in the Southeast of the country, sustainability plays an important role.
– Unique Scenery
The Scenic Spots with low CO2 load are a milestone of a sustainable tourism industry, which counteracts against the greenhouse gas emissions to reduce those in the long term. Particularly the travel business industry causes by flights and other means of transportation increasing greenhouse gas emissions. By the preservation and protection of natural regions, CO2 can be bound. The Scenic Spots are characterized by their unique landscape as well as a healthy ecosystem – what we can absolutely confirm regarding Krabi! On about 4,700 km2 the landscape is marked by the weather: The typical limestone rocks were formed by waves and weather alike to impressive formations, caves, grottos, bays and phantastic beaches. We are sure you have already heard of Koh Phi Phi, Ao Nang or Railay Beach, which you find all nearby. Krabi is known as the most spectacular province in Thailand, which also explains the numerous visitors there.
– “Leave nothing but footprints, take only good memories”
Since August 2018, 154 Thai National Parks banned all disposable plastic products. The whole is flanked by a campaign to animate the tourists to think about the impact of plastic and to behave more environmental-conscious and use products that are meant to be used several times. A sign on the beach of Ko Mae Ko at Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park sticks out with a picture showing products and the time it takes to decay. The sublime aim is to reduce three million parts of plastic. Since 2018 on 24 popular beaches, smoking is prohibited which already led to a considerable reduction of cigarette stumps on the beach.
